MidiALF BOM updated
Here’s the current MidiALF BOM. Let me know if you have any corrections or updates for it.

Important note for those who plan to build CV extension board
CV extension board needs +/-12V to do its job, so the main board has to be powered by 12V AC adapter. Because of this, the following changes need to be made:
- 7805 voltage regulator has to be mounted on a decent heat sink, or replaced with switching mode equivalent OKI-78SR-5/1.5-W36H-C (Digikey part# 811-2692-ND, Mouser 580-OKI78SR51.5W36HC)
- C3 should be changed to 220uF/25V. With this specification the capacitor is too high to fit between main board and 1/4″ jack connector on the CV board, so it has to be mounted on the top side of the pcb, see the picture below.
- MIDI IN/OUT LEDs and their current limiting resistors on the sides of MIDI connectors should not be mounted since MCU ports that drive them are used to interface with CV board, so their flashes will be unrelated to MIDI activity.
I recommend to use OKI-78SR-5/1.5-W36H-C because even with a heat sink the 7805 can get pretty hot, especially if your LCD is one of those current hungry ones. With switching mode regulator the heat is not an issue at all and it’s easy to mount, see here:
First “white board” MidiALF is up and running.
MidiALF main pcbs are here!
First batch of MidiALF main boards is here! I’ll build one to make sure everything is OK and will be emailing you guys shortly.
You can purchase MidiALF main board directly from me for US$35.00 and pre-programmed ATmega644p MCU for US$15.00. The CV extension board (when available) will be sold for US$30. The prices do not include shipping from California, USA. Currently I can only accept PayPal payments.
The BOM cost at Digikey for the components needed to complete MidiALF main board comes to about $80 not including taxes and shipping cost.
MidiALF main pcbs ordered!
Just wanted to let you guys know that first batch of MidiALF main board PCBs has been sent to the fab, expected to be back here in a few weeks. CV board design is finalized, waiting for the main boards to arrive so I can make final tweaks.
MidiALF project status update
v0.90 firmware is finished and works as expected. Two units are built and are in testing. The third pcb is delivered to a customer and hopefully will be built soon.
Preliminary documentation and build instructions are ready, however are still pretty rough at this point, will certainly need a review.
